Wild Elephant’s Rampage: 6 Villagers Killed, 14 Dead in 7 Days Due to Elephant Attacks in West Singhbhum

The havoc caused by wild elephants in West Singhbhum district has now turned deadly. An incident in the Noamundi block has shaken the state of Jharkhand. A wild elephant went on a rampage across two villages, killing six people.

Chaibasa:
In the Noamundi block of West Singhbhum district, located under the Jeteiya police station, the area was left in shock after a wild elephant caused mayhem on the night of Tuesday. The elephant trampled five villagers from Bawadia village and one person from Badapasai village to death. Among the deceased, four people from Bawadia village are reported to be from the same family, plunging the village into mourning.

Four Other Villagers Seriously Injured
Initial reports suggest that four other villagers were seriously injured in the attack, with one in critical condition. All the injured have been hospitalized for treatment.

Elephant Entered Residential Area Late at Night
The incident was confirmed by Forest Guard Amit Mahato, Jeteiya Gram Panchayat head Sanjeet Tiriya, and Panchayat Samiti member Deepa Gop. According to reports, the wild elephant suddenly entered the residential area late at night and attacked the sleeping villagers.

Police and Forest Department En Route
The police are on their way to gather more information from Badapasai and Bawadia villages. Meanwhile, panic has spread in the surrounding villages due to the elephant’s terror. Villagers have demanded that the forest department capture the elephant or drive it back into a safe forest area.

Victims Were Sleeping in Straw Huts
It is reported that in Bawadia village, all six family members were sleeping in a straw hut made of hay in the field. Four of them were trampled to death, while one managed to escape. One member’s leg was also crushed.

Forest Guard’s Statement
Forest Guard Amit Mahato stated that a team from the forest department was in the Jeteiya area throughout the night. On Tuesday, the area was announced via loudspeakers, but the villagers took it lightly and continued to sleep in their straw huts in the fields. Mahato confirmed that all five injured villagers were admitted to the T.M.H. Noamundi, and one of them succumbed to their injuries, raising the death toll to six. The elephant, separated from the herd, was in Gitikendu village until 4 a.m. and has now reached Katepada village in the Jagannathpur police station area.

In the last seven days, wild elephant attacks have claimed the lives of 14 people in West Singhbhum district. A special team from West Bengal has been called in to capture a rogue tusker.
