Why Are Bihar Congress Leaders Demanding Separation from the RJD? Big Decision Expected in Today’s Meeting

Patna: Tensions inside the Mahagathbandhan have intensified after the humiliating defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections. The alliance—once projected as a strong opposition bloc—now appears to be under tremendous strain, with Congress leaders openly expressing dissatisfaction. Amid rising resentment, the Congress has called an important meeting today (December 1) at the historic Sadaqat Ashram in Patna. This is the party’s first major gathering in the state capital after the election results.

The meeting aims to review the defeat, evaluate the functioning of the alliance, and decide the Congress party’s future strategy in Bihar. What makes the situation more alarming is the growing internal rift—evident from the fact that during the recent Mahagathbandhan legislators’ meeting, only 2 out of 6 Congress MLAs attended, signalling deep discord.

Congress Calls Crucial Review Meeting at Sadaqat Ashram

Presided over by Pradesh Congress President Rajesh Ram, today’s meeting is expected to be decisive. State spokesperson Snehashish Vardhan confirmed that senior leaders, district presidents, and heads of frontal organisations have been invited.

Key agenda points include:

  • Detailed review of the Assembly election results
  • Identification of reasons behind the defeat
  • Discussion on restructuring party strategy
  • Preparation for the nationwide protest on December 14 in Delhi against alleged “vote theft”

Only after this meeting will the Congress officially clarify its stand on continuing or reconsidering its alliance with the RJD.

Low Attendance in Tejashwi’s Meeting Raises Questions

The friction within the alliance became public when Tejashwi Yadav convened a meeting of Mahagathbandhan MLAs at his official residence two days before the Assembly session. Shockingly, four Congress MLAs skipped the meeting, raising speculations of discontent.

Although RJD state president Mangni Lal Mandal denied any misunderstanding, his statement itself triggered fresh political debate. He said Tejashwi Yadav was unanimously chosen as Leader of Opposition, and Congress sent MLC Sameer Singh as its representative.

However, the absence of four MLAs suggests otherwise and has given the Congress enough reason to reassess its position within the alliance.

All Eyes on Today’s Meeting

The Congress high command is reportedly unhappy with the way alliance politics unfolded in Bihar. Many party leaders believe Congress did not get a fair share of seats and suffered because of poor coordination with the RJD.

Today’s meeting at Sadaqat Ashram is, therefore, crucial. A major decision regarding Congress’s future in the Mahagathbandhan may be announced after the internal discussions conclude.
