Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh – Bhupender Sharma, known as Pinky Chaudhary, President of the Hindu Raksha Dal, was arrested on charges of distributing swords in a bid to create terror in Ghaziabad. The arrest took place on Tuesday, along with his son, Hars. Earlier, 10 other individuals had already been detained in connection with the incident. Authorities are now planning to invoke the Gangster Act against Pinky Chaudhary.
Background of the Incident:
The incident occurred on 29th December when members of the Hindu Raksha Dal, led by Pinky Chaudhary, openly distributed swords at their office in Shalimar Garden. Chaudhary later posted a video claiming responsibility for the act. Since then, he had been evading the police, but finally, on Tuesday, he and his son were apprehended. The police had previously arrested eight individuals involved in the distribution of the weapons.
Who is Pinky Chaudhary?
Pinky Chaudhary, whose real name is Bhupender Sharma, is a controversial figure in the political landscape. He is the founder of the Hindu Raksha Dal, which he established in 2013. The group claims to have over a million members in Delhi-NCR. Chaudhary, who is also known as ‘Pinky Bhaiya’, has been embroiled in several disputes over the years. He had previously been involved in an alleged attack on Delhi’s former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, though no significant action was taken in the case.
In January 2014, the Hindu Raksha Dal was accused of attacking the Aam Aadmi Party’s office in Ghaziabad. He was arrested along with his associates, but no major legal actions followed. Additionally, Pinky Chaudhary’s name surfaced in connection with violence against students during the 2020 JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) protests.
Other Allegations:
Chaudhary has also been accused of inciting violence in slum areas, labeling residents as Rohingyas, and allegedly setting fire to their dwellings. In this instance, a police report was filed under the Gangster Act, but no further action was taken at the time. Following the sword-distribution event, the authorities adopted a stricter approach and have now filed reports for further action under the Gangster Act.
The Arrest and Legal Proceedings:
During his fugitive status, Pinky Chaudhary released two videos where he openly challenged the police and the administration. On Tuesday, he and his son were captured in Shalimar Garden and brought before the court. Both have been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
Family’s Allegations:
Pinky Chaudhary’s family has also made serious allegations against the police. His daughter held a press conference accusing the police of taking her mobile phone, as well as private photos and data without consent. Additionally, Yati Narsinghanand Giri, the Mahamandaleshwar of Panchdashnam Juna Akhada, visited the Police Commissioner’s office to protest against the alleged mistreatment of Chaudhary’s family members. He demanded that the police stop harassing them.
The case is ongoing, and the authorities are continuing their investigation into the activities of the Hindu Raksha Dal and its leader, Pinky Chaudhary.
