Ranchi, Jharkhand: The Jharkhand government has appointed senior retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Alka Tiwari (1988 batch) as the State Election Commissioner of Jharkhand. Ms. Tiwari had retired as the Chief Secretary of Jharkhand on 30 September 2025, and shortly after, she was entrusted with this new responsibility. On 27 January 2026, she announced the dates for the upcoming municipal elections in the state.
Four-Year Tenure as State Election Commissioner
Alka Tiwari will hold the position of State Election Commissioner for a term of four years, or until she attains the age of 65, whichever comes first. Her appointment has been made under the powers conferred by Section 66(2) of the Jharkhand Panchayati Raj Act, 2001, and the terms and conditions of service are governed by the State Election Commissioner (Appointment & Conditions of Service) Rules, 2001 and its amendments.
Announcing Jharkhand Municipal Elections
In her first official act as State Election Commissioner, Alka Tiwari announced that the Jharkhand municipal elections will be held on 23 February 2026, with results scheduled for 27 February 2026 — bringing a major development for the people of the state.
A Legacy of Integrity and Excellence
Known for her outstanding performance and impeccable integrity, Alka Tiwari is highly respected for her simplicity, diligence, and work efficiency. Her illustrious career includes serving as Advisor in the NITI Aayog, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, and Secretary of the Tribal Commission. She has also held key administrative positions such as District Collector of Gumla and Lohardaga, and Secretary in Commercial Taxes and Forest & Environment Departments.
Ms. Tiwari is academically distinguished, holding a Postgraduate degree in Psychology from Meerut University (where she received the Governor’s Gold Medal as a topper), an M.Sc. from Manchester University, UK, in Civil and Structural Engineering with a Gold Medal in Development Project Management, and a Law degree from Ranchi University. She has also completed specialized short-term courses at Harvard University (on Financial Inclusion) and Duke University (Public Financial Management for Financial Advisors).
Following in Her Husband’s Footsteps
Interestingly, her husband Dr. D.K.
