Patna: In Bihar’s political culture, the traditional chura-dahi feast held on Makar Sankranti carries deep symbolic significance, often marking new beginnings. This year, former minister and Jan Shakti Janata Dal chief Tej Pratap Yadav is hosting his first chura-dahi feast as the leader of a new political outfit—but at a government residence he is set to vacate.
The feast will be held at 26M, Strand Road, Patna, a government bungalow that was allotted to Tej Pratap Yadav during his tenure as an MLA. However, following his defeat in the 2025 Assembly elections from the Mahua seat, he is no longer entitled to the accommodation, raising questions about where he will reside after the event.
Invitations Sent Across Political Lines
Tej Pratap Yadav has formally printed invitation cards for the occasion, scheduled for January 14, 2026, from 11 a.m. onwards. Apart from inviting his father and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, he has also extended invitations to several prominent NDA leaders, including Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, Legislative Council Chairman Awadhesh Narayan Singh, Minister Santosh Suman, and Panchayati Raj Minister Deepak Prakash.
The gesture has drawn political attention, as it reflects Tej Pratap’s attempt to carve out an independent political identity while maintaining symbolic ties with his father’s long-standing traditions.
Government Bungalow to Be Vacated Soon
The Strand Road residence was allotted to Tej Pratap Yadav after he won the Hasanpur seat in the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections. However, with his electoral defeat in 2025, the allotment has effectively ended. Sources indicate that he is likely to vacate the bungalow after the Kharmas period, which is traditionally considered inauspicious for shifting residences.
Interestingly, the same government accommodation has already been allotted to MLA Lakhendra Kumar Raushan, who is also waiting for Kharmas to conclude before taking possession.
Why the Delay in Vacating the Residence
According to political and cultural traditions followed by the Lalu family, moving homes during Kharmas is avoided. This belief has influenced the timing of the relocation. Similar considerations were earlier cited regarding Rabri Devi’s residence at 10 Circular Road, where only minor adjustments, such as shifting flower pots, were reportedly made.
It is believed that Tej Pratap Yadav may relocate along with his mother after Kharmas, though he has not publicly disclosed his future address so far.
Political Transition Underway
As Tej Pratap Yadav prepares to host his first major political event under the banner of Jan Shakti Janata Dal, the chura-dahi feast is being viewed as both a cultural ritual and a political statement. While the event will take place at his former official residence, his next address—both political and personal—remains uncertain, symbolising a transitional phase in his political journey.
