Western Delhi Residents Rejoice: Monsoon-Proof Road Project Worth ₹64 Crore Launched to Tackle Waterlogging

New Delhi, January 13, 2026: Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday inaugurated the Nangloi–Najafgarh Road strengthening and drainage construction project. Valued at ₹64.04 crore, the initiative aims to provide a long-term solution to waterlogging, potholes, and traffic congestion in Western Delhi, benefiting thousands of residents.

The project focuses on improving drainage systems and road infrastructure along the entire corridor, promising smoother traffic flow and enhanced public safety. “Today is a significant day for the people of Nangloi and Najafgarh, as their longstanding demands are finally being addressed,” said Lieutenant Governor Saxena. He added that the Delhi government has taken concrete steps to resolve the area’s chronic problems, which have persisted for years due to inadequate infrastructure.

Comprehensive Road and Drainage Development
The project includes road strengthening, construction of footpaths, central verges, and new stormwater drains. According to officials, these improvements will not only reduce traffic congestion and accidents but also lower dust and pollution levels in the region.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that her government has prioritized solving Delhi’s core infrastructure problems. “During the previous governments’ tenure, roads and drainage systems in this area were neglected for years. In just 11 months, our administration has taken decisive action to provide permanent solutions,” she said.

The government is also undertaking regular cleaning of drains, constructing new trunk drains, and implementing sewage treatment plant (STP) projects. These measures aim to ensure that only clean water flows into the Yamuna and prevent recurring waterlogging in the capital.

Collaboration Across Departments
The project is being executed by three divisions of the Public Works Department (PWD)—WR-1, WR-2, and SWR-2—with active coordination from MCD, DDA, I&FC, DJB, BSES, IGL, and Traffic Police. The Nangloi–Najafgarh stretch will also see the construction of RCC crash barriers on central verges, ensuring safe and effective water drainage during the monsoon.

Transport Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh described the project as a landmark step in Delhi’s development. “For the past 11 years, roads and drainage here have been in a dilapidated state, making life extremely difficult, especially during the rainy season. This project is a testament to our commitment to a safe, accessible, and waterlogging-free Delhi,” he said, also hinting at future metro connectivity along the corridor.

PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh assured that the roads would be rebuilt promptly, with a five-year quality guarantee, holding contractors accountable for any defects within that period.

With the launch of the Nangloi–Najafgarh Road project, Western Delhi residents can expect a safer, cleaner, and more convenient commute, while the city takes a significant step toward modern, monsoon-resilient infrastructure.
