Political Row Erupts Over Mahua Moitra and Pinaki Mishra’s Wedding Reception Venue in Bengal

Krishnanagar (West Bengal): Six months after their private wedding in Berlin, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Pinaki Mishra hosted a grand wedding reception in West Bengal’s Nadia district on Saturday. What was meant to be a joyous celebration, however, has sparked a major political controversy — with the BJP accusing the couple of using government property for a private event.

The reception, attended by nearly 8,000 guests, was held at the Karimpur Regulated Market Ground, which is typically reserved for public and administrative activities. BJP leaders have alleged that the field — a public property — was transformed into a lavishly decorated venue with pandals, lighting, and catering arrangements worth crores, all for a personal celebration.

BJP Questions Use of Public Property for Private Event

BJP Yuva Morcha leader Krishnu Singha raised sharp questions on social media, posting an image of the invitation card that listed Karimpur Regulated Market Football Ground as the venue.
He wrote, “Best wishes to Mahua Moitra, but one question remains — why was a public ground, where even local religious events like kirtans and fairs are not permitted, suddenly available for a private dinner party of over 6,000 guests?”

Singha further claimed that local bus services were disrupted due to the event, and accused the district administration of political bias, saying that ordinary citizens were often denied permission for cultural gatherings at the same venue.

TMC Dismisses Allegations as ‘Cheap Politics’

Leaders from the Trinamool Congress dismissed the BJP’s accusations, calling them baseless and politically motivated.
TMC MLA Rukbanur Rahman, who attended the event, said, “This is cheap politics by a desperate opposition. The couple obtained all necessary permissions and bore the entire cost privately. The BJP is trying to make a political issue out of a personal celebration.”

Rahman added that minister Ujjwal Biswas, several MLAs, party workers, and thousands of guests attended the event to bless the couple. “It was a happy occasion, not a political gathering,” he emphasized.

Social Media Buzz and Local Reaction

Before the reception began, videos of elaborate decorations — including massive lighting arrangements and food stalls — surfaced on social media, triggering debate. Many users questioned why a wedding event was permitted on a ground where local Hindu religious gatherings such as Baul melas and kirtans had reportedly been restricted in the past.

Local sources claim that buses carrying guests arrived from Berhampore and nearby towns, with dinner arranged for thousands.

Background of the Couple

Mahua Moitra, first elected as an MLA from Karimpur in 2016 and later as MP from Krishnanagar in 2019, has long maintained a residence in the region. Her husband, senior BJD leader Pinaki Mishra, is a prominent parliamentarian from Odisha.

Their wedding took place on May 30 in Berlin, followed by a private reception in Delhi on August 5. Saturday’s grand event in Moitra’s home turf was meant to celebrate with her Bengal supporters — but it has instead ignited a full-blown political storm over the use of a government venue for personal festivities.
