Kolkata: In a heartwarming tale of love and courage, two women from the Sundarbans region of West Bengal, Riya Sardar and Rakhi Naskar, have defied social norms to marry each other in a traditional Bengali ceremony. Their story is emerging as an inspiring example for those who believe in true love.
The wedding took place on Tuesday at a local temple, where the couple exchanged garlands and embarked on a new chapter of life together.
Who Are Riya and Rakhi?
Riya Sardar hails from Mandirbazar, while Rakhi Naskar comes from Bakul Tala. Both are professional dancers. Riya lost her parents at a young age and was raised by her uncle and aunt, whereas Rakhi grew up with her family. The two first connected via phone about two years ago, and their friendship gradually blossomed into love.
Family Reactions
When Riya revealed her relationship to her family, they refused to accept it. Left with no alternative, she moved out to live with Rakhi. Rakhi’s family, however, stood firmly by their side. After discussions with neighbors, the couple organized a wedding at a local temple on Tuesday, where they exchanged garlands and officially began their married life.
Riya Speaks Out
Speaking to the media, Riya said, “I told my family about my relationship, but no one accepted it. I decided I would not lose the person I love. That’s why I chose to leave home and live with Rakhi. We have respected our own desires. Love is what truly matters. Who says only a woman can love a man or a man can love a woman?”
The Beginning of Their Love Story
Rakhi added, “We have been together for two years. We started dating, but many questioned how two women could be in a relationship. Yet, we decided to stay together for life. My family accepted it, while Riya’s family did not. Her father told her she could not stay at home, so she came to live with me and my family.”
A Growing Trend
This is not the first such story in West Bengal. Last September, a similar case in Dubrajpur captured public attention when Namita Das from Malda traveled to Khairashol to marry Sushmita Chatterjee. The couple exchanged sindoor at a local Shiva temple to officially begin their married life.
Riya and Rakhi’s story highlights the changing social landscape in India, where love and personal choice are gradually challenging long-standing norms and inspiring others to embrace freedom in relationships.
