‘We May Lose Our Neck, But Not the Khejri’: Massive Protests Erupt in Bikaner to Save State Tree

Bikaner, Rajasthan: A historic movement to protect Rajasthan’s state tree, the Khejri, from being cut down by solar companies began on Monday in Bikaner, drawing massive crowds and statewide attention. Protesters vowed, “They may cut our necks, but the Khejri will not fall.” The demonstration led to markets shutting down and schools declaring half-day closures in solidarity.

Political and Social Mobilization
The protest saw participation from prominent leaders, including Shiv MLA Ravindra Singh Bhati, MLA Abhimanyu Poonia, and former minister Bhanwar Singh Bhati, along with youth political figures and environmental activists. Former MLA Mahendra Bishnoi strongly condemned the solar companies, stating, “If we could make Salman Khan remember his grandmother, what chance do these tree-cutting companies have? Legal reforms and strict punishment are urgently needed.”

Support from Across States
Thousands of people, particularly women, joined the protest from Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. Organizers arranged food for nearly one lakh participants at the Polytechnic College campus.

Protesters allege that solar companies in western Rajasthan have been cutting Khejri trees under the cover of darkness to clear land for their projects. For over a month, indefinite sit-ins have been ongoing at the Collectorate and Karnisar Bhatiyan, with several participants falling ill due to harsh conditions. Despite this, the protesters’ resolve remains unshaken, highlighting the community’s commitment to protecting the Khejri tree.
