Barwani (Madhya Pradesh):
In a remarkable show of determination, girl students from Pati block in Barwani district walked long distances to reach the district collector’s office and lodge serious complaints against their hostel administration. Their protest prompted immediate administrative action, and a three-member inquiry committee has been formed with a 15-day deadline to submit its report.
Students Walk 10 km, Travel 22 km by Bus, Then Walk 2 km More
The students—residents of the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Girls’ Hostel in Chauki, run under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan—set out early in the morning to meet the collector.
They covered:
- 10 km on foot from Chauki to Pati
- 22 km by bus from Pati to Barwani
- 2 km on foot from the bus stand to the collectorate
Upon reaching, they narrated their ordeal to the district administration.
“Insects in Food, Menu Ignored, Wardens Misbehave” — Students’ Allegations
The girls alleged that the food served in the hostel often contains insects and is not prepared according to the prescribed menu.
Many also claimed that the warden, Usha Solanki, misbehaves with them and frequently dismisses their health complaints by saying they are “pretending.”
However, Warden Solanki denied all allegations, stating she strictly follows the food menu and rules.
After hearing the students, SSA DPC Pramod Verma and other officials assured prompt action, following which the students returned.
Collector Forms Three-Member Inquiry Committee
District Collector Jayati Singh took immediate cognizance of the matter and constituted a three-member inquiry panel comprising:
- R.S. Gundiya – District Programme Officer, Women & Child Development
- J.C. Verma – District Treasury Officer
- Sheetal Solanki – Pr. Tehsildar
The collector clarified that the warden has not yet been removed from charge. The committee has been instructed to submit its report within 15 days, based on which strict action will be taken.
