Chamoli/Dehradun, Uttarakhand: In a chilling reminder of the dangers on mountain roads, Chamoli Police released a video of an overloaded vehicle narrowly avoiding a plunge into a deep gorge. The footage, shared on the police department’s Instagram page, has left viewers shocked and sparked widespread reactions online.
Video Shows Life-Threatening Negligence
The video captures a vehicle moving recklessly along a steep hill road, dangerously close to the edge. Police officials say such overloading and overspeeding are among the leading causes of road accidents in hilly regions. The driver in the video narrowly escaped a fatal accident, prompting authorities to urge immediate corrective action from all motorists.
Police Advisory and Safety Measures
Chamoli Superintendent of Police, Surjeet Singh Panwar, warned that negligent driving endangers both the driver and passengers. He emphasized that the police have issued strict directives to enforce traffic rules across the district to ensure road safety. Officers highlighted that in many remote areas, traffic is sparse and police presence is limited, which delays accident reporting and increases risk.
Protecting Children and Public Safety
The warning comes shortly after a separate incident in Tharali, where a taxi driver carried 20 schoolchildren in a vehicle meant for 10 passengers, directly endangering their lives. The driver faced strict police action for this blatant negligence.
Chamoli Police said public safety remains their top priority and announced ongoing awareness campaigns through social media to educate drivers about the dangers of overloading, speeding, and reckless driving on hilly roads.
Message to Motorists
Authorities urge drivers to adhere strictly to traffic rules, respect vehicle capacity limits, and drive cautiously, especially on mountain routes. Failure to comply could result in severe legal action, as well as preventable loss of life.
