Violent Clash Over Funeral on Narmada Banks in Khargone Leaves 10 Injured; 19 Named in FIRs

A violent clash erupted on Monday in Khargone district over a funeral on the banks of the Narmada River, leaving 10 people injured. The injured, including a police constable and the village watchman, were admitted to Mandlaeshwar Community Health Centre for treatment. Police have filed cases against 19 named individuals and around 25 others.

Dispute Over Funeral Site
The incident occurred in Sulgaon, Mandleshwar police jurisdiction, following the death of 90-year-old Gangabai Patidar. Members of the Patidar community chose to conduct her funeral approximately 200 meters from the Narmada, on private land donated by Vasudev Patidar, citing poor condition of the main cremation path.

Objections from Neighbors
Around 9 a.m., as preparations for the cremation began, residents from nearby areas, including the Kahar and Mankar communities, objected. They argued that smoke from the funeral pyre near homes could cause inconvenience and create fear among children.

Clash Turns Violent
According to SDOP Mandleshwar Shweta Shukla, initial discussions between the two groups failed to resolve the issue, escalating into verbal abuse and stone-pelting. Eyewitnesses reported that protesters threw stones from rooftops and streets at those attending the funeral, including police personnel. Amid the chaos, the body remained on site temporarily while stones were exchanged between the groups.

Casualties and Police Response
The violence resulted in injuries to 10 individuals, including a police constable and village watchman Shravan. Police from three local stations were deployed to control the situation. Under tight security, the funeral was eventually completed at the disputed site.

Current Situation
Police have registered cross FIRs based on complaints from both sides and are identifying other participants in the stone-pelting through video evidence. While a tense calm currently prevails in the village, additional police forces remain deployed as a precaution. A peace committee meeting was also held on Monday evening to ensure stability.
