New Delhi: A disturbing incident took place at the Arts Faculty of Delhi University (DU) on Friday, when a female journalist was assaulted while covering a student protest in support of UGC regulations. Left-wing and right-wing student groups accused each other of involvement in the violence.
Attack on Female Journalist
According to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a female journalist associated with a YouTube channel was attacked around 2 PM while reporting on the protest inside the DU campus. ABVP Delhi State Secretary Sarthak Sharma alleged that left-wing student activists physically assaulted the journalist after she asked questions during the protest. He further claimed that several of the attackers were not enrolled DU students and demanded strict action from both the police and university administration.
Clash Between Student Groups
The All India Students Association (AISA), which had organized the protest supporting the new UGC regulations, accused right-wing students of attacking its members. AISA stated that during the scuffle, its DU Secretary Anjali was injured while trying to protect the journalist. The group also alleged that security personnel failed to intervene, allowing the attackers to continue the assault unchecked.
AISA further claimed that when students later went to the police station to lodge complaints, a large crowd gathered outside, reportedly issuing threats, while police reportedly did not intervene immediately.
Police Investigating Incident
Police confirmed that an investigation is underway. A senior officer said, “A clash occurred between two student groups around noon. A complaint has been filed by one student at the police station alleging assault by another student associated with AISA. Legal action will follow based on the investigation.”
The incident has sparked concern over campus safety and the protection of journalists covering student protests at Delhi University.
