Dehradun, Uttarakhand: Villages in Garhwal, Uttarakhand, have implemented new regulations for weddings to curb extravagance and promote simplicity. The new rules limit women to wearing only three gold ornaments during marriage ceremonies and strictly prohibit alcohol at such events. Violations of these rules can result in fines up to ₹50,000–₹51,000.
Community-Led Initiative
The decision comes from local panchayats in the tribal areas of Chakrata and the Dunda block of Uttarkashi, aiming to make weddings more affordable and culturally grounded. According to Times of India, these guidelines are part of a collective effort to discourage the display of wealth and reduce social pressures associated with marriage.
In Kandhar and Indroli villages, the panchayat has mandated that women can wear only a nose pin, mangalsutra, and earrings during weddings. Violation of this rule can result in a ₹50,000 fine. This move followed discussions among local women, who highlighted that the rising cost of gold and heavy jewelry has created undue economic pressure on less affluent families.
Alcohol Prohibition
The villages have also taken steps to ban alcohol at weddings and other ceremonies. In Lodra village, Dunda block, the gram sabha passed a proposal enforcing an alcohol ban, with violators facing ₹51,000 fines and potential social boycotts. Gram Pradhan Kavita Butola explained that this decision came after discussions with women’s and youth groups, reflecting the community’s frustration with weddings turning into expensive displays rather than cultural celebrations.
Reducing Social Pressure
Elder residents noted that jewelry was once a symbol of joy, but now it has become a source of stress. Arjun Singh, a Kandhar villager, said parents often lose sleep worrying about wedding expenses. Local resident Tikam Singh (56) added that weddings have shifted focus from traditional rituals, food, and music to DJ parties, imported alcohol, and staged photo shoots. He hopes these new rules will help the community return to its roots and celebrate weddings in a meaningful and affordable way.
These regulations mark a significant step toward simplifying marriages in Garhwal villages, balancing tradition with economic and social sensibilities.
