Dehradun: After a brief spell of mild weather, cold has returned to Uttarakhand as rainfall and snowfall swept across the state. The weather is expected to remain dry on Thursday and Friday, but conditions may change again starting Saturday.
Active western disturbances have brought significant snowfall to the higher altitudes of the state and rainfall to the plains, resulting in a noticeable drop in temperatures. Earlier in January, dry conditions had led to a slight rise in daytime temperatures, but the recent precipitation has brought much-needed relief from the unseasonal warmth.
Rainfall and Snowfall Statistics
According to the Meteorological Department, January has recorded 13% more rainfall than the usual average. Bageshwar and Nainital experienced the heaviest showers. Typically, January sees around 38mm of rain, but recent rains over two days brought the total to 42.8mm. Following the forecasts, higher-altitude areas of Tehri district have witnessed the season’s second snowfall, while the lower regions experienced rain, causing temperatures to dip.
Tourist destinations in Tehri, including Dhanaulti, Kaddu Khaal, Kanatal, Surkanda Devi Temple, and Pratap Nagar, saw rainfall from early morning. While snowfall has caused minor disruptions in daily life, it has been a boon for the tourism sector, attracting large numbers of visitors to Dhanaulti and Kanatal to enjoy the snow.
High Himalayas and Security
Continuous snowfall over the past two to three days has blanketed peaks in the higher Himalayan regions of Pithoragarh. Despite the harsh conditions, ITBP, SSB, and Army personnel stationed along the China and Nepal borders remain on duty, ensuring the security of the nation.
