Uttarakhand: Dog Sparks Communal Tension in Haldwani, Police Lathi-Charge Crowd; 7 Arrested

Haldwani, Uttarakhand – 18 November 2025: A seemingly minor incident involving a dog triggered a major communal scare in Haldwani city, forcing police to resort to a lathi-charge to control the crowd. Seven people have been arrested in connection with the unrest.

Animal Head Sparks Communal Clash
The trouble began near Ujaleshwar Temple on Bareilly Road in Ujala Nagar, when the head of an animal was found at the site on Sunday night. Social media amplified the news, causing tensions to rise between two local communities. CCTV footage later revealed that the incident was caused by a dog placing the animal head near the temple, unintentionally igniting fear and suspicion.

Violence and Property Damage
Following the incident, Hindu groups took to the streets, and clashes broke out between communities. Shops from Peeli Kothi to Ujala Nagar were vandalized and temporarily closed. Stones were thrown, and both private and public properties suffered damage.

Police Intervention and Lathi-Charge
As the situation escalated, Muslim residents also gathered near the temple area, intensifying the tension. The police intervened with a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd and prevent further violence. Traffic on Bareilly Road was diverted, and security personnel were deployed at sensitive locations throughout the city.

Legal Action and Arrests
After regaining control, Haldwani police registered cases against approximately 50 unidentified individuals for inciting unrest, vandalism, and property damage. So far, seven people have been arrested, and additional security forces remain deployed to maintain peace.

This unusual incident underscores how minor events can escalate rapidly, and authorities have urged residents to verify facts before reacting, emphasizing communal harmony.
