In a major infrastructural boost for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency, Varanasi is set to get Uttar Pradesh’s longest elevated road, stretching an impressive 21 kilometers. The ₹4,100 crore project, approved by the Central Government, will be developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
The elevated road will begin from Harhua–Rajatlab Outer Ring Road and run along the Varuna River, culminating at Namo Ghat, one of Varanasi’s most prominent riverfronts. Once completed, the corridor will allow pilgrims and tourists arriving from Jaunpur, Prayagraj, and Lucknow to reach Namo Ghat, Kashi Vishwanath Dham, and other key destinations without entering the city’s congested roads.
According to sources, Uttar Pradesh’s current longest elevated road is the 10-kilometer stretch in Ghaziabad. The upcoming Varanasi Elevated Road will be twice as long, setting a new record for the state.
From Varuna Corridor to Smart Connectivity
Efforts to link the Varuna Corridor with the city’s transport network have been ongoing since 2019. Initially, plans were drawn to develop an e-rickshaw transport management system along the corridor. However, annual flooding of the Varuna River repeatedly delayed progress.
In 2022, NHAI conducted a detailed survey to construct an elevated road along the Varuna bank, connecting it to Ring Road Phase-2. The project was temporarily shelved due to its high estimated cost — but with the latest Central approval, it has now been revived with full financial backing.
Multiple Connectivity Points Planned
The elevated corridor will feature four connecting bridges between the Outer Ring Road and Namo Ghat, ensuring seamless traffic movement across the city’s major junctions.
Once operational, the new road will eliminate traffic jams, reduce travel time, and boost tourism, especially during peak pilgrimage seasons.
This ambitious project not only aims to transform Varanasi’s transport landscape but also aligns with the broader vision of developing Varanasi as a smart, spiritual, and global heritage city.
