Who is Satyendra Singh? Life Sentence Convict in 1983 Murder Case Freed by UP Governor for Good Conduct

Ghazipur: In a compassionate move highlighting the spirit of reformative justice, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has pardoned the remaining life sentence of Satyendra Singh, a convict in a 1983 murder case, citing his exemplary behavior in Varanasi Central Jail.

Governor’s Clemency Based on Discipline and Conduct

According to official sources, the order of remission was issued on November 4 by Joint Secretary Surya Prakash Mishra and circulated to concerned authorities by Deputy Secretary Mamta Srivastava.
Satyendra Singh, a resident of Dhushka village under Jamaniya police station in Ghazipur district, had been convicted of murder by the Ghazipur Sessions Court in 1983 and sentenced to life imprisonment.

In 2018, the Allahabad High Court commuted his sentence to 10 years’ imprisonment. Satyendra had already served around eight years, including remission, and maintained a record of good behavior throughout his incarceration. On this basis, the State Government recommended his release, which was approved by the Governor under her powers of clemency.

Conditional Release Ordered

The official order stated that if Satyendra Singh is not implicated in any other criminal case, he should be released after furnishing two sureties and a personal bond. The Probation Officer has been instructed to ensure proper compliance with the release formalities.

District Magistrate Avinash Kumar confirmed that the release process has been initiated, while Jail Superintendent Shesh Nath Yadav informed that Satyendra was transferred from Ghazipur to Varanasi Central Jail on August 28, 2024. Jail records describe him as a disciplined and cooperative inmate.

A Case Reflecting Reformative Justice

Officials have termed this a landmark instance of reform-oriented governance, emphasizing the principles of rehabilitation and reintegration over punitive confinement. Copies of the Governor’s order have been forwarded to police and prison authorities for immediate execution.
