Ballia: In a drive against noise pollution, Ballia police have taken action against the unauthorized use of loudspeakers in several mosques across the district. FIRs have been registered against 17 clerics and mosque custodians for violating Supreme Court and state government directives on noise control.
Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh told the media on Tuesday that mosque authorities and clerics had been repeatedly warned. Despite these warnings, complaints continued to pour in about loud broadcasts. Consequently, legal action was initiated under Sections 223(A) and 293 of the Indian Penal Code, as well as Section 15(1) of the Environment Protection Act, 1986.
According to police reports, an FIR was filed against Maulvi Mohammad Shahjahan of Gothhuli Mosque following a complaint by Sub-Inspector Mahendra Rawat of Bansdih Road Police Station. The mosque had two large loudspeakers that were being used at high volume. Similarly, Sub-Inspector Durgesh Gaur’s complaint led to an FIR against Mohammad Salim Ansari, custodian of Shodhanpur Mosque, where three loudspeakers were operating at full volume despite objections from local residents.
In addition, FIRs were lodged against Haider Ali, custodian of Jamua Mosque, and Gulam Arshad, custodian of Umar Ganj Mosque, on the complaints of Sub-Inspectors Anand Mohan Upadhyay and Prashant Dubey. Loudspeakers had been installed at both mosques.
Further FIRs were registered in Nagara, Pakri, and Revti police stations against mosque custodians and clerics for similar violations. Police have instructed all concerned to comply with noise regulations and have stated that the campaign will continue.
