KGMU Doctors Give New Life to Boy Worshipped as Lord Ganesha: Complex Surgery a Success

Lucknow: In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) successfully performed a complex surgery on 14-year-old Ganesh, a boy from Kushinagar, who was born with a large congenital nasal protrusion. Due to the unusual growth on his nose, villagers and his family believed him to be an incarnation of Lord Ganesha and worshipped him, avoiding medical treatment for over a decade.

Rare Congenital Condition Diagnosed

Ganesh was diagnosed with Nasoethmoidal Encephalocele, a rare congenital disorder where brain tissue protrudes through a hole in the skull. This caused widening of the bones between his nose and forehead, a condition known as hypertelorism. The deformity caused him social distress, as children in school would mock him, and over time, it significantly affected his quality of life.

Life-Changing Surgery Performed

Under the leadership of Professor Brijesh Mishra, a joint team of plastic surgeons and neurosurgeons at KGMU performed an 8-hour surgery, meticulously repairing the defect while protecting the underlying brain structures. The procedure involved:

  • Removal of the protruding nasal portion
  • Reshaping of the forehead bones
  • Restoring the normal contour of the nose and face

Professor Mishra explained that the surgery was conducted free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, highlighting the accessibility of advanced medical care. A second stage of surgery, to further refine the shape of Ganesh’s nose, is planned after 5–6 months.

Family Hails Doctors as True Saviors

Ganesh’s family expressed immense gratitude, saying, “We believed our son was a form of God, but the real gods are these doctors who gave him a new life.” Professor Mishra emphasized that this surgery is not only a medical milestone but also a reminder to overcome superstition and seek timely treatment.
