Delhi-Dehradun Expressway Opening Delayed Again: New Deadline Set for December

Ghaziabad: Commuters eagerly awaiting the opening of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway will have to wait a little longer, as the project’s completion deadline has been extended once again. According to officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), a major technical obstacle involving a high-voltage transmission line between Baghpat and Saharanpur has caused the delay.

Earlier, the expressway was expected to open in October, but now the new completion target has been moved to December. NHAI officials confirmed that work on the transmission line will begin after a shutdown starting November 10, lasting approximately one month. Once the issue is resolved, the expressway is expected to be fully operational by early next year.

The Cause of the Delay

The Baghpat-Dehradun-Saharanpur transmission line currently runs directly over the expressway corridor. Shutting it down completely risks a blackout across the Saharanpur region. To prevent this, NHAI and power authorities will take phased shutdowns to safely realign the line and continue road construction.

Officials said that 90% of the work on the Baghpat–Saharanpur stretch has already been completed, with the remaining 10% expected to finish by December. Similarly, between Saharanpur and Ganeshpur, minor work near Chhutmal is also pending and will be completed within the same timeline.

Project Director Narendra Singh confirmed that once the transmission line issue is resolved, the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway will be ready for inauguration. “We are targeting December for completion. The delay was unavoidable, but work will now proceed at full speed,” he stated.
