Shamli:Tension gripped Jharkhed village in Kairana area of Shamli district after funeral ashes were allegedly stolen from a cremation ground, triggering outrage among villagers. Following protests and a police investigation, two women were arrested, and the stolen remains were recovered from their possession, police officials confirmed.
Incident After Last Rites
According to police and family members, Mithan Singh, an elderly resident of the village, passed away on January 29. His last rites were performed the same day at the village cremation ground in accordance with Hindu rituals.
On January 30, Mithan Singh’s son Gopal, along with family members and villagers, visited the cremation site for asthi-sanchayan (collection of ashes). However, they were shocked to find the remains scattered and partially missing.
Villagers Protest, Police Alerted
The discovery led to anger and unrest among villagers, who immediately gathered at the cremation ground and raised slogans, demanding strict action. The situation became sensitive due to the religious sentiments involved.
Villagers alleged that around 11 am on January 29, the wife of a local resident, Shabbir, along with other women, was seen visiting the cremation ground. They accused her of taking away the ashes, allegedly for tantric rituals, further intensifying public outrage.
Police Action and Arrests
Upon receiving information, Kairana police reached the spot, pacified the crowd, and registered a case. Acting swiftly, the police detained and later arrested two women. Based on their statements, the stolen funeral ashes were recovered.
Investigation Underway
Superintendent of Police N.P. Singh said the accused women are being questioned in detail.
“We are investigating how long they have been involved in such activities and what their motive was,” the SP said.
Law and Order Restored
Police officials stated that the situation in the village is now under control, and further legal action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
