Patna: The Bihar Transport Department is preparing to take strict action against habitual traffic offenders, with nearly 50,000 drivers facing possible suspension or cancellation of their driving licences for repeated violations.
State Transport Commissioner Arif Ahsan reviewed enforcement measures during a video conference with senior officials on Tuesday and directed departments to initiate firm action against drivers who consistently ignore traffic rules.
Officials said the proposed action is based on recommendations received from the police and traffic authorities. More than 50,000 cases have been identified where licence suspension or cancellation proceedings may be initiated. The primary objective, authorities said, is to restore discipline and improve safety on state roads.
The department has compiled a list of drivers with multiple past violations. In a move aimed at deterrence, officials indicated that vehicle numbers of repeat offenders may be made public. Before cancelling or suspending licences, the numbers of violating vehicles are expected to be published in newspapers as a public notice, effectively serving as both legal notification and public disclosure.
According to transport department data, the highest number of traffic violations has been recorded in Patna, Muzaffarpur and Bhagalpur districts. Officials noted that many of the repeat offences involve ignoring helmet rules, signal violations and driving without proper lighting at night.
Authorities said the crackdown is part of a broader effort to enforce accountability and reduce road accidents across Bihar.
