UP SIR: Election Commission Grants Exemption from Personal Appearance; Voters Can Authorize Representatives

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh: The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list is currently underway in Uttar Pradesh. During this process, claims and objections on the draft voter list are being addressed, and voters have been given certain concessions to make participation easier.

The Election Commission has announced that voters who are unable to personally appear before officials due to work or other commitments can now authorize someone else to represent them. Voters need to submit a written authorization, signed or marked with a thumb impression, allowing their representative to present their case to the Election Registration Officer (ERO) or Assistant ERO (AERO).

CEO’s Statement
Navdeep Rinwa, Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh, explained that notices have been issued to voters whose details could not be mapped during the SIR. The Commission has made provisions for online responses and exemption from personal appearance to ensure voter convenience. “Voters who cannot attend in person for valid reasons can authorize someone to attend on their behalf,” he said.

Online Access and Required Documents
Voters can check notices and respond online by logging in at voters.eci.gov.in.

  • Voters born before 1 July 1987 need to submit only their own documents.
  • Voters born between 1 July 1987 and 2 December 2004 must submit their documents along with one parent’s documents.
  • Voters born after 2 December 2004 must submit documents for themselves and both parents.

Accepted documents include government-issued ID cards, birth certificates, passports, board mark sheets, permanent residence certificates, forest rights documents, caste certificates, National Register of Citizens, family registers, land/house allocation certificates, and Aadhaar cards.

The Election Commission has emphasized that this facility is intended to make the SIR process smoother and more accessible for all voters.
