In a bizarre incident on a UP Roadways bus, a conductor charged a separate ₹126 ticket for a couple’s pet parrot, treating it as “luggage.” The couple, travelling from Myor to Kanpur, were stunned when the conductor insisted that any bird or animal in a cage falls under the luggage category, making a ticket mandatory. Passengers onboard were equally surprised.
The Parrot That Cost Extra
Rinki Devi from Rāmādevī, Kanpur, had recently visited her parental home in Myor. There she bought a parrot for just ₹50 after it caught her fancy. On Wednesday morning, she and her husband Rahul boarded a Kanpur-bound bus from the Kidwai Nagar depot.
The conductor, Anwar Saeed, first issued tickets worth ₹556 for the couple. Moments later, he demanded an additional ₹126 as the parrot’s fare. Rinki, who was holding the parrot’s cage on her lap, protested asking why a bird she was carrying in her arms would require a ticket.
“According to Roadways Rules, It Is Luggage”
The conductor firmly replied that UP Roadways rules classify any bird or animal carried in a cage as luggage, and therefore a fee must be paid.
He added that the fare for transporting animals or birds is calculated at 50 paise per kilometre.
A heated argument followed between the couple and the conductor. However, unwilling to escalate the matter further, Rinki eventually paid the extra amount and took the parrot’s ticket.
Throughout the journey, the tiny green parrot sat comfortably in her lap — ironically, as the most expensive passenger on board after the unexpected fare.
