UP Raj Bhavan Renamed ‘Jan Bhavan’ to Symbolize Public Connect

Lucknow: In a significant administrative change, the official residence of the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, previously known as Raj Bhavan, has been renamed ‘Jan Bhavan’. The decision aligns with the central government’s directive to standardize the nomenclature of Governors’ residences across India.

The renaming has been implemented with immediate effect and will be reflected in all official, administrative, and statutory communications. The necessary procedural formalities at the state level have already been completed.

Government’s Rationale
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, this initiative aims to create uniformity in the naming of Governors’ residences nationwide. The Uttar Pradesh government has adopted the change to comply with this directive.

The name ‘Jan Bhavan’—literally “People’s House”—is intended to reinforce the connection between constitutional offices and the public, symbolizing transparency and the commitment of officeholders to work for the citizens’ welfare. Going forward, all official correspondence, invitations, documents, signage, and boards will reflect the new name.

Statewide and National Context
The renaming also aligns with existing practices, as the Chief Minister’s office in Uttar Pradesh is already known as Lok Bhavan. Similar changes have been made in several other states: West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Gujarat, and Tripura have all renamed their Raj Bhavans. In Union Territory of Ladakh, the Deputy Governor’s residence has been renamed Lok Niwas, replacing the earlier name Raj Niwas.

This change reflects a broader effort to strengthen public engagement and modernize administrative nomenclature across the country.
