Amethi, Uttar Pradesh: In a major move, the Amethi district administration has cancelled 13,928 ration cards belonging to ineligible beneficiaries under the National Food Security Scheme (NFSS). The action follows a thorough verification process aimed at ensuring only eligible households receive government-subsidized food grains.
Why the Cards Were Cancelled
The cancelled cards belonged to individuals or families whose annual income exceeds ₹3 lakh or who own more than 5 acres of land, making them ineligible for NFSS benefits. Despite this, they were previously receiving free ration under the scheme designed to support economically weaker sections.
Verification Process
A list of 27,831 ration cardholders was initially sent by the central government to the district supply department for verification. Officials conducted door-to-door inspections to confirm eligibility. During the process, 13,928 beneficiaries were found ineligible, and their ration cards were cancelled.
Current Scenario in Amethi
Currently, the district has 70,000 Antyodaya cardholders and 2,71,000 eligible household cardholders, covering a total of 1,395,000 units. Under the NFSS, Antyodaya cardholders receive 35 kg of ration per month, while eligible household cardholders receive 5 kg per unit per month.
Next Steps
District Supply Officer (DSO) Shashikant stated that verification is ongoing, and any further ineligible ration cards identified will also be cancelled. Authorities are closely monitoring the process to ensure strict adherence to eligibility criteria and prevent misuse of government resources.
