UP Assembly Speaker Orders Strict Action Against Officials Ignoring Legislators’ Calls

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana has directed strict disciplinary action against officials who fail to respond to legislators’ calls or disregard their complaints. The move comes after repeated concerns raised by Assembly members about unresponsive officials.

On Wednesday, the Speaker took a firm stance, instructing that such officials be held accountable to ensure such behavior does not recur. He emphasized that the disciplinary measures should be exemplary, serving as a deterrent. Mahana also directed that clear orders be issued from the government, and existing instructions be strictly enforced.

While addressing the House, Speaker Mahana highlighted the distinct responsibilities and limits of the executive, judiciary, and legislature. He stressed that any encroachment or competition among these institutions weakens the democratic framework. “If institutions do not respect their respective domains, the spirit of democracy suffers, and a positive legacy cannot be left for future generations,” he warned.

The Speaker also offered guidance to legislators, urging them to work beyond electoral considerations. “Those who act solely with the next election in mind are politicians, but those who serve the interests of future generations are true statesmen,” he said. He emphasized that elected representatives must prioritize long-term public welfare, not just immediate political gains.

The directive follows complaints raised on Tuesday by the Leader of Opposition and Samajwadi Party members, who alleged that the executive was interfering in the jurisdictions of the legislature and judiciary. While the Speaker had assured the House that the matter would be addressed, Wednesday’s clear instructions now formalize action against non-compliant officials.
