Unknown Animal Attacks in Barwani: Three Injured, Including Two Children, Referred to Indore

Barwani, January 7, 2026: In a shocking incident early Tuesday morning, an unknown animal attacked residents of Mojali village in the Palsud area of Barwani district, leaving three people seriously injured, including two children. The victims, 9-year-old Manisha, 6-year-old Sajwan, and 60-year-old Raziya, sustained deep facial injuries and were referred to Indore for advanced medical treatment after initial care.

According to Ashish Bansod, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Barwani, the attack occurred while some villagers were sleeping inside their homes and others near the entrance gates. The incident caused panic and fear among the local population.

Leopard Attack Suspected Initially
While some villagers suspected a leopard attack, the forest department believes that a dog may have been responsible. A team from the forest department conducted an inspection at the site early morning and has launched a search operation to identify the animal. The DFO has advised villagers to remain alert, especially during nighttime.

Medical Treatment and Referral
Dr. Surekha Jamre, Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) of Barwani, confirmed that the victims received anti-rabies vaccines and immunoglobulin at Palsud Primary Health Centre before being referred to the district hospital. From there, they were sent to MY Hospital, Indore, for further treatment. Civil Surgeon Manoj Khanna reported that all three suffered bites to the face, mouth, and nose, with Raziya also sustaining injuries to her eyes and nose. The patients are currently stable.

Previous Attacks in the Region
The Palsud region has witnessed several animal attacks in recent years. In May 2025, six villagers aged between 40 and 70 died from rabies following jackal attacks in nearby Rajpur. Additionally, leopard attacks in August and September last year claimed the lives of two children in the area, heightening fear among the local population.

Authorities are continuing investigations to prevent further incidents and have urged residents to exercise caution.
