Umaria Panchayat Corruption: Only ₹5 Lakh Work Done on ₹18 Lakh Project; Villagers Confront Secretary, Met with Arrogance

Umaria, Madhya Pradesh: Corruption has reportedly plagued the Asodh Gram Panchayat in Umaria district. Government projects, including an ₹18 lakh pond and a ₹7 lakh bridge, have been executed using substandard materials, resulting in blatant misappropriation of public funds. Residents are demanding immediate and strict action against the officials responsible.

Villagers Raise Questions, Secretary Responds Arrogantly
According to local resident Ajay Barman, poor-quality materials were used during construction—dust instead of sand, large stones instead of concrete, and low-grade cement. When he questioned the Panchayat secretary about this, the official reportedly dismissed his concerns, saying, “You always raise these political issues. This is how work is done. Go wherever you want to complain; we don’t care.”

Barman further alleged that for projects worth ₹1 lakh, only ₹20,000–30,000 is actually spent. Complaints were also made to the CEO of the district, but no action has been taken so far.

Construction Done Without Transparency
Ward member Ram Tehal Yadav, a member of the construction committee, claimed that even committee members were not informed about the work. He stated that the ₹14.8 lakh pond was so poorly constructed that stones from the excavation were used for pitching, and yet full payment had already been made. He demanded a fair and thorough investigation into all works carried out by the Panchayat.

CEO Promises Investigation
When approached, CEO of the District Panchayat Abhay Singh Ohriya said that whether the pond is complete or not is under investigation. He assured that if the project is completed, an inquiry will be conducted to ensure the work meets the official estimates and standards, and appropriate action will be taken.
