Two Prisoners Escape from Kannauj District Jail, Administration Launches Massive Search

Kannauj, January 5, 2026: In a major security breach, two prisoners escaped from Kannauj District Jail by scaling the prison walls, sending shockwaves through the district. The district administration and police immediately swung into action following the incident.

One of the escapees was lodged under the Arms Act and for theft, while the other was held under the POCSO Act. Both prisoners are reported to be around 22 years old. According to District Magistrate Ashutosh Mohan Agnihotri, one of the prisoners had been incarcerated since June, while the other was taken into custody in December.

The escape appears to have involved rudimentary tools, as the prisoners reportedly used bedsheets tied into ropes to scale the walls. The incident has raised serious concerns about lapses in jail security.

The District Magistrate confirmed that the jail administration has filed an FIR and strict action will be taken against any negligent prison staff. Police teams, led by the Superintendent of Police, are conducting a continuous search for the escapees.

“The initial investigation indicates negligence on the part of the on-duty prison guards,” DM Agnihotri said. “A thorough inquiry is underway to determine the exact circumstances and assign responsibility.”

Deputy jailers, along with several prison guards, have joined the search, while all police stations in the district remain on high alert.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the fugitives immediately.
