Khargone, Madhya Pradesh: The police in Khargone have arrested two individuals attempting to commit fraud using a fake WhatsApp profile of District Collector Bhavya Mittal. The incident came to light during the Diwali festival, and police investigations are ongoing.
Police Action and Investigation
District Superintendent of Police, Ravindra Verma, stated that the case was registered and investigated with assistance from the cyber cell. Using information shared in the fraudulent messages, authorities traced the perpetrators to a bank account involved in the scam.
During the investigation, police found that cash had been withdrawn from an ATM in Rewa. Bank officials, along with CCTV footage, helped identify the individuals involved in the withdrawal.
Details of the Arrested
The SP confirmed that the two arrested suspects assisted in opening the fake bank account by providing SIM cards under false names. They admitted to helping create the account but claimed that the main culprits who withdrew the funds are still at large. The arrested individuals were later released on notice of appearance after initial questioning.
Authorities emphasized that the fake messages, sent in the collector’s name, requested urgent fund transfers with account details shared in the text. Only one official reportedly transferred money, and the SP did not reveal the names of the accused or the official involved.
Collector’s Advisory
Collector Bhavya Mittal had previously issued her official contact number via the Public Relations Department and warned the public about such cyber fraud attempts on social media. She urged citizens to remain vigilant against scams using fake profiles.
This incident highlights the growing concern over cyber fraud targeting officials and the need for heightened awareness among the public.
