Trial Run of Amrit Bharat Express at 130 km/h Between Ahmedabad and Mumbai: Indian Railways’ Ambitious Plans

Ahmedabad: Indian Railways is once again making headlines with its modern, semi-high-speed Amrit Bharat Express, now undergoing trial runs on the Ahmedabad–Mumbai route. The train can reach a maximum speed of 130 km/h, and the route has been deemed safe for operations. Here’s a look at the Railway’s preparation and plans for this new service.

Following the success of the Vande Bharat trains, the Amrit Bharat Express is equipped with advanced facilities and is already operational on several routes across India. Once fully rolled out, the number of Amrit Bharat Express trains is expected to rise from 30 to 39. Currently, the trial runs are being conducted between Ahmedabad and Mumbai—the same corridor earmarked for the upcoming high-speed bullet train. According to sources, the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) is supervising these trials with a specially formulated strategy.

Ahmedabad to Become a Major Hub
Ahmedabad’s Kalupur Railway Station, being developed as a 16-floor world-class station, is expected to serve as a major hub for Amrit Bharat operations in the future. Discussions suggest that the service could soon expand to longer routes such as Ahmedabad–Patna, Ahmedabad–Darbhanga, and Ahmedabad–Varanasi. The estimated fare for a 1,000 km journey is around ₹500, making it significantly more affordable than other premium train services.

Features of Amrit Bharat Express:

  • Maximum operational speed: 130 km/h
  • Push-pull technology with engines at both ends
  • 22 coaches, including sleeper, general, and non-AC categories
  • Reduced station halt time and faster pick-up to shorten journey duration
  • Special suspension system to minimize jerks and shocks
  • Passenger amenities include CCTV surveillance and LED lighting

Difference Between Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat Express
While Vande Bharat trains are fully air-conditioned, Amrit Bharat features a similar aerodynamic engine design but primarily offers non-AC sleeper and general coaches. Its specially designed suspension system enhances passenger comfort by reducing jerks during the journey. With these features, the Amrit Bharat Express promises a travel experience that is faster, safer, and more affordable.
