Chhatarpur, Jan 30, 2026: A viral video claiming the discovery of centuries-old gold coins near the historic Rajgarh Palace in Chandranagar, near Khajuraho, sparked a frenzy among locals, who rushed to the site with spades and baskets to dig for treasure.
The uproar began after a video circulated on social media, showing what appeared to be a gold coin. Soon, dozens of villagers descended on the palace grounds, turning the area into an impromptu excavation site. Authorities had to intervene to prevent further chaos.
Officials clarified that the incident originated from construction work along NH-39, where some shiny metal fragments in soil used for road filling were mistaken for historical coins. Misled by the viral footage, people rushed to dig, hoping to find treasure.
The Khajuraho Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) office immediately dismissed the claims, stating there is no evidence of any treasure or ancient coins at the site. Police also confirmed that no one recovered any valuable objects during the commotion.
Bamitha Police Station In-Charge Ashutosh Shrotriya warned the public against falling for such viral misinformation. Unauthorized digging is illegal, and the administration is monitoring those spreading rumors.
Authorities are currently investigating the origin of the viral video and the true nature of the metallic fragments, while urging residents to remain calm and exercise restraint until the matter is clarified.
