Gorakhpur: A heart-wrenching incident has shaken Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, where a woman and two young girls were hit by a speeding train while crossing railway tracks. The accident claimed the lives of two people on the spot, while one minor girl is battling for her life in hospital. The tragedy has plunged the entire neighbourhood into deep mourning.
According to police and local sources, 32-year-old Savita Yadav, a resident of Uttari Humayunpur under Kotwali police station area, was heading to the market on Sunday evening. She was accompanied by two neighbouring girls—eight-year-old Siya Yadav and seven-year-old Kanak Kumari—after promising to buy them chocolates. Locals said Savita was well-known in the area and often took children along with her, as they shared a close bond with her.
While crossing the railway tracks near Gorakhnath Overbridge, the trio noticed a stationary goods train and stood on the adjacent track, unaware that an express train was approaching from the opposite direction. Mistaking the horn of the oncoming Mordhwaj Express for that of the goods train, they failed to react in time. Within moments, the high-speed train struck all three.
Savita Yadav and Siya Yadav died instantly at the scene. Kanak Kumari, also known as Mishti, was critically injured and rushed to hospital, where she is undergoing treatment. Kanak’s father, Amresh Sahni, who works in Dubai, has left immediately after receiving the devastating news.
Neighbourhood in Mourning
The incident has left the locality in shock. Residents described the scene as unbearable, with preparations underway for two funeral biers to leave the same neighbourhood. Grief-stricken neighbours recalled Savita as a kind, sociable woman who always stood by others in times of joy and sorrow.
Savita’s husband, Hemant Yadav, an auto-rickshaw driver, remains inconsolable. Their six-year-old son keeps asking when his mother will return, a question that has moved even the strongest hearts to tears. Meanwhile, Kanak’s mother is constantly by her daughter’s bedside, praying for her recovery.
Police Action
Kotwali Station House Officer Kshetrapal Singh confirmed that the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and all necessary legal formalities are being completed. “The injured child is undergoing treatment, and the matter is under procedural investigation,” he said.
The tragic incident once again highlights the dangers of crossing railway tracks and has left an indelible mark of sorrow on the city.
