
Mandla, Madhya Pradesh: A male leopard found injured in the Sarhi range of Kanha Tiger Reserve died while being transported for treatment. The animal was discovered near Anikat Nala on Saturday in a critically injured state. Despite efforts by the Forest Department and wildlife experts from Jabalpur, the leopard succumbed before reaching Mukki Hospital.
Rescue Efforts and Immediate Treatment
The leopard was located near Daladala Beat Block No. 729, Anikat Nala (Bendiware Daladala Forest Route). The patrolling team immediately alerted senior officials. Veterinary specialists from the Wildlife and Forensic School, Jabalpur, and local forest staff arrived promptly and administered on-site treatment. Given the severity of its injuries, the leopard was being shifted to Mukki Hospital in a rescue vehicle when it died en route.
Post-Mortem Conducted According to NTCA Guidelines
A post-mortem was conducted on Sunday under the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), New Delhi, and the Chief Wildlife Warden of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal. The procedure was performed by Dr. Amol Rokde, Dr. Dipali Parte, and Dr. Vishal Udde. Preliminary examination indicated that all organs were intact, and the death appeared to be due to natural causes.
Final Rites Follow Standard Operating Procedures
Following the prescribed Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), the leopard was given a proper cremation. The ceremony was attended by PK Verma (Deputy Director, Core), Suraj Singh Sendram (Assistant Director, Banjar), Shankarlal Maravi (Tehsildar, Bhua Bichhiya), Dilan Singh Saiyam (Sarpanch, Kisli), NTCA representative Omkar Nar, Chief Wildlife Warden Chandresh Khare, and staff of Sarhi Forest Range.
The incident underscores the challenges of wildlife rescue in Kanha Tiger Reserve and highlights the dedication of forest officials and veterinary teams in responding to emergencies.
