Traffic Violations Surge in Maharashtra: 434,433 Vehicles Fined ₹260.59 Crore in 180 Days

Mumbai: The Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across Maharashtra have taken strict action against traffic violations, checking 1,357,618 vehicles over six months from April 1 to September 30, 2025. Of these, 434,433 vehicles were found violating traffic rules, resulting in a total fine collection of ₹260.59 crore.

Details of the Enforcement Drive
The campaign primarily targeted serious violations including driving without a license, expired insurance, missing Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, unauthorized vehicle modifications, mobile use while driving, and overloading. Inspections were conducted on private passenger vehicles, school buses, auto-rickshaws, metered taxis, and private vehicles. Offending drivers were fined between ₹500 and ₹20,000 depending on the violation.

Future Measures
Officials stated that the campaign aims to reduce accidents, enforce discipline in passenger and goods transport, and improve overall road safety. Similar joint inspection campaigns will continue statewide to ensure traffic compliance as the number of vehicles continues to grow.

  • Not wearing helmet/seatbelt: ₹500–1,000
  • Invalid vehicle documents: ₹2,000–3,000
  • No insurance: ₹2,000–4,000
  • Driving without license: ₹5,000
  • Vehicle fitness certificate missing: ₹500–5,000
  • Over-speeding: ₹1,000–2,000
  • Drink and drive: ₹10,000 + 6 months imprisonment
  • Using mobile phone while driving: ₹2,000

Mumbai RTO Breakdown

  • Borivali: 4,887 cases – ₹1.96 crore collected
  • Mumbai Central: 11,101 cases – ₹4.85 crore collected
  • Mumbai East: 19,971 cases – ₹10.05 crore collected
  • Mumbai West: 0 cases – ₹0

Enforcement Under the Motor Vehicles Act
Under the Motor Vehicles Act, RTO officers, traffic police, and transport inspectors can impose fines, impound vehicles, suspend licenses, and take administrative action against violators.
