Traffic Jam at Dhaula Kuan to End: NHAI Offers ₹18.41 Crore to Shift Police Chowki

New Delhi: In a major move to ease chronic traffic congestion at the Dhaula Kuan flyover, the road leading towards Naraina will be expanded to three lanes. To facilitate this, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has offered ₹18.41 crore to the Delhi Police for relocating and reconstructing the police chowki, along with compensation for 752 square meters of land required for the road widening.

Details of the Road Expansion

The plan involves widening the road towards Naraina by approximately 100–150 meters to reduce the bottleneck caused by the existing police chowki and nearby metro pillars. Currently, the Dhaula Kuan Police Chowki sits on 3,136.24 square meters of land, of which 1,300 square meters will be required for the road expansion. The remaining 1,836 square meters will be used for reconstructing the police chowki.

According to PWD officials, traffic from Subroto Park Police Chowki, Delhi Cantt, and Gurgaon heading towards Naraina takes the left turn near the chowki. Another loop connects India Gate and Karol Bagh. The expansion plan will primarily address traffic moving towards Naraina, significantly easing congestion on the Dhaula Kuan flyover.

Funding and Approvals

In a meeting held on 6 November last year, police officials informed that a proposal for the remaining funds has been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Once approval is received, NHAI will be formally notified to proceed with the project. The Delhi Police Housing Corporation will oversee the relocation and reconstruction of the chowki using the funds offered by NHAI.

Expected Impact

The road widening is expected to resolve decades-long bottlenecks at Dhaula Kuan, which have historically caused severe traffic jams. Once completed, commuters from Delhi Cantt, Gurgaon, and Subroto Park heading towards Naraina can expect smoother traffic flow and reduced travel times.
