The pages of history remember Maharani Kamsundari Devi of Darbhanga as a selfless philanthropist whose generosity supported the nation in times of need. Whenever India faced a crisis, the Darbhanga royal family opened its treasure without hesitation, leaving a legacy of unparalleled patriotism and charity.
A Golden Contribution During the China War
During the 1962 Sino-Indian War, the Indian Army struggled with dwindling resources. Seeing the need, Maharani Kamsundari Devi stepped forward and donated nearly 600 kilograms of gold to support the armed forces. At that time, the gold was valued at approximately ₹3 crore. Today, the same quantity of 24-carat gold would be worth over ₹1.6 crore per 10 grams, making this gift truly priceless.
Three Private Jets Donated to the Nation
The Maharani’s philanthropy extended beyond gold. She donated three private jets from her personal collection to the Indian government, ensuring they could be used in emergencies or national service.
Land for Darbhanga Airport
The land on which Darbhanga Airport now stands was also a gift from Maharani Kamsundari Devi. She dedicated her private airstrip, spanning around 90 acres, to the nation. Today, it serves thousands of travelers, linking Darbhanga to the rest of India and the world.
Maharani Kamsundari Devi’s life remains a shining example of selflessness, patriotism, and unwavering support for the nation, proving that true service is measured not by wealth, but by the courage to give.
