New Delhi: In yet another shocking incident in the capital, thieves have targeted a temple, this time striking at the Hanuman Temple near Gol Market. The culprits reportedly stole money from the temple’s donation box, leaving the priest and devotees in distress.
Details of the Incident
According to police sources, Kaushalendra Mishra (55) from Nawaada, Uttam Nagar, serves as the priest at the Hanuman Temple. Due to his wife’s medical treatment at a nearby hospital, he was temporarily staying in a room behind the temple. On the night of 1–2 February, Mishra and his family were asleep at the temple.
Early in the morning, around 6 AM, temple volunteer Chhote Lal Sharma opened the main gate and noticed the doors were ajar. Upon alerting the priest, it was discovered that approximately ₹15,000 in donations had been stolen from the donation box.
Police Action
Following the discovery, the Mandir Marg Police registered a case and launched an investigation into the theft.
This incident follows a similar temple robbery on 19 January, when thieves broke into the Sanatan Mandir in Nirman Vihar, East Delhi, and stole a 6.5 kg silver platter worth nearly ₹25 lakh from the Shiva Lingam.
Authorities have warned temple authorities and locals to remain vigilant, as such incidents highlight the increasing risk of thefts targeting religious places in the city.
