Jaipur: The Rajasthan Legislative Assembly’s budget session has recently been making headlines less for policy debates and more for heated arguments and controversial remarks. On Thursday, a tense situation arose when senior Congress MLA Rajendra Pareek lashed out at BJP legislators, using words that the ruling party called “improper and unhealthy”.
Incident in the House
The episode began as Harimohan Sharma, Congress MLA from Bundi, was addressing the House. During his speech, several BJP legislators repeatedly interrupted him with interjections and objections. Frustrated by the disruptions, Rajendra Pareek, senior MLA from Sikar, addressed the Speaker, saying:
“Mr. Speaker, clear their seats. They’re picking at them. This is a house of disease. These people stand up every two minutes.”
BJP reacts strongly
Pareek’s use of the rural idiom “picking at them” triggered a strong reaction from BJP MLAs, who demanded that the words be stricken from the official proceedings and called on Pareek to apologize. The uproar caused the proceedings to be temporarily suspended.
Debate over Assembly decorum
This is not the first time the budget session has witnessed controversial language and verbal spats. While Pareek defended his remarks, citing repeated interruptions by BJP MLAs, the ruling party criticized his language, stating that using terms like “house of disease” in the Assembly undermines the dignity of the institution and is inappropriate in a democratic forum.
The incident once again highlights the tense atmosphere and partisan clashes that have characterized the current Rajasthan Assembly session, raising questions about the maintenance of decorum in the House.
