Bhopal Traffic Police have stepped up enforcement after dangerous stunts and overspeeding by youth on VIP Road, Boat Club, and Airport Road went viral on social media. Authorities have warned that violators will face strict action under the Motor Vehicles Act as well as relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Viral Videos Spark Action
The videos show motorcyclists weaving recklessly through lanes and SUV drivers racing on nearly empty roads late at night. In one clip from VIP Road, people were seen performing stunts while standing through the sunroof of a moving car.
Traffic officials acknowledged the severe risk posed by such behavior, which endangers not only the stunt performers themselves but also innocent pedestrians. According to police data, overspeeding and drunk driving remain major causes of road accidents in the city.
Nighttime Checks Intensified
To curb these dangerous activities, police have launched targeted night-time checks in high-risk areas. Despite these efforts, some drivers continue to exploit deserted roads after midnight. Officials emphasized that violators are being penalized under both the Motor Vehicles Act and relevant sections of the IPC, and preventive measures are taken under civil safety regulations when necessary.
Daily Arrests and Penalties
Shyamla Hills SHO Bhupinder Kaur Sandhu stated that special checks in the Boat Club area result in vehicles being seized and violators sent to court. “On average, one to two stunt performers are caught daily and fined,” she said. The police have also recommended the installation of speed-monitoring CCTV cameras in the area. Local residents and shopkeepers are encouraged to report any dangerous activity, prompting immediate police action.
Popular Stunt Spots
Airport Road, covering Gandhi Nagar, Koh-e-Fiza, and Parwalia police limits, has become a preferred location for late-night racing. “The wide highway attracts youth for risky driving after midnight,” said a senior officer. Recently, a video went viral showing people standing through car sunroofs on VIP Road, confirmed Koh-e-Fiza SHO KG Shukla.
Fines and Enforcement
Police maintain four fixed night-check points at Raja Bhoj Statue, Khangaon, Karbala, and Lalghati, followed by continuous night patrolling. In one case, a biker was caught and fined ₹10,000 by the court. Additional DCP (Traffic) Basant Kaul announced a special night-checking drive to clamp down further on reckless driving and stunts.
The Bhopal police have sent a clear warning: the era of reckless midnight stunts on city roads is over, and violators will face strict consequences.
