Tensions Escalate in Manipur’s Ukhrul, 20 Homes Torched in Community Clashes

Imphal, February 10, 2026: Tense situations continue in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, where members of the Kuki-Zo and Naga communities set fire to each other’s homes for the second consecutive day. The district administration has suspended internet services for five days to curb the spread of unrest.

Violence Leaves Several Injured
The violence erupted in the Litan Sarekhong area, located between Imphal and Ukhrul headquarters, leaving several people injured. Authorities confirmed that the injured were admitted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal. Following a visit to the hospital, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh appealed to citizens to maintain peace and restraint. Villagers were forced to flee their homes to reach safer locations. The clashes came hours after the district administration imposed a curfew under Section 163 of the BNS Act on Sunday evening.

Deputy CM Visits the Area Amid Rising Tensions
Ukhrul District Magistrate Ashish Das stated that before sunrise on Sunday, both communities set fire to five to six homes, and strong winds caused the flames to spread, ultimately burning 20 houses. Following the incident, Deputy Chief Minister Losi Dikho, accompanied by local MLAs Ram Muiva and Kimnio Hungshing Haokip, visited the affected area and held meetings with civil society leaders from both communities to restore calm.

Despite these efforts, fresh violence erupted shortly after, with unidentified miscreants setting fire to eight more homes.

Residents Forced to Evacuate
District Magistrate Das added that affected families, along with residents from nearby villages, have temporarily relocated to relatives’ homes due to fear of further attacks. The situation remains tense, but with the support of the Central Armed Police Forces, order is being maintained. Army units, Assam Rifles, and Rapid Action Force teams have been deployed in sensitive areas to prevent further escalation.
