Despite several rounds of discussions, the political turmoil within the Karnataka Congress shows no signs of easing. Senior Congress leaders held an extensive meeting in New Delhi to address the ongoing speculation over a possible leadership change in the state. However, no final decision emerged, prompting the party high command to schedule another meeting soon.
DK Shivakumar Signals Intent
During an interaction with party workers, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar dropped a significant hint, asking them to “be prepared.” His statement has triggered multiple political interpretations, further intensifying speculation over a potential leadership shift.
Meanwhile, former minister K.N. Rajanna launched an indirect attack on Shivakumar, remarking that although some individuals may be “ready to become Chief Minister,” the Congress government was not formed because of one person. He insisted the party’s victory was a result of collective effort.
Rajanna’s Sharp Remarks
Rajanna did not hold back as he commented on the ongoing confusion:
“Some people are already talking about cabinet reshuffle. Many within the party are prepared to become Chief Minister. But it is wrong to say that Congress came to power because of any single individual,” he said.
He added that even the BJP had raised concerns about leadership confusion, and such discussions were not limited to Congress circles alone.
Leadership Race Widens
Political corridors in the state are buzzing with questions:
– Will K.N. Rajanna return to the cabinet?
– Is Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s strategy working?
– Will the high command agree to any change?
Within the Congress, several leaders are seen as contenders for the top post. Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara is viewed as a strong Dalit face, having contributed significantly to the party organization since 2013. Rajanna reiterated that the Congress government is the result of collective hard work, not individual ambition.
At the same event, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s son Yathindra came out strongly in support of his father.
High Command Holds Crucial Meeting
A key meeting took place at Sonia Gandhi’s residence, attended by Sonia Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and General Secretary K.C. Venugopal. After the meeting, Venugopal briefed reporters that although the Karnataka issue was discussed, no decision had been finalized.
He asserted that the Karnataka Congress was “completely united,” and the leadership would continue deliberations in the coming days. The high command has also instructed state leaders to refrain from making public comments on the sensitive matter.
Power-Sharing Agreement Under Spotlight
The debate has intensified as the Congress government recently completed half of its five-year term. A reported “power-sharing formula” between Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar during 2023 had suggested a leadership change after 2.5 years.
However, Siddaramaiah recently stated that he intends to continue as Chief Minister for the full term and present future budgets as well.
Shivakumar, on the other hand, avoided a direct response, calling the matter a “confidential agreement” among a few senior leaders and saying he trusts his conscience.
These statements have added fuel to the political fire, prompting the party high command to intervene and work toward a resolution.
What’s Next?
As the Congress leadership prepares for another round of discussions, all eyes are on the potential outcome. Whether the high command decides to continue with Siddaramaiah, shift the leadership, or devise a middle path — the coming days will be crucial for Karnataka politics.
