Mathura — Tension gripped Vrindavan after police arrested four men accused of forcibly shutting down a liquor shop that lies on the route of Premanand Maharaj’s padyatra. The incident gained momentum after Bageshwar Dham head Pandit Dhirendra Shastri, during his Sanatan Ekta Padyatra concluding on November 16, raised concerns about the presence of a liquor outlet along the sacred route.
Liquor Shop Targeted a Day After Shastri’s Appeal
On 17 November, self-proclaimed cow protector Daksh Chaudhary, along with his associates Abhishek Thakur, Shibbo Kapil, and Akku Pandit, allegedly forced the closure of the liquor shop located at Sunarakh Tiraha, behind Prem Mandir. A video of the incident went viral, prompting swift action from the police.
All four were arrested from Rishikesh on 24 November. On November 25, they were produced in court, where their bail plea was rejected. The court sent them to judicial custody till 9 December.
Supporters Lay Siege to Vrindavan Police Station
Following the arrests, supporters of Daksh Chaudhary gathered outside the Vrindavan Kotwali late Monday night, shouting slogans and alleging police harassment. They claimed that the accused were falsely implicated in a robbery case involving ₹5 lakh, calling the charges “fabricated” and “politically motivated.”
Demand for a Meat- and Liquor-Free Braj Region
The protestors demanded that the Braj region be completely free of meat and alcohol, stating this has been a long-standing demand of local residents. They appealed to all dharmacharyas and sadhus across the country to come to Mathura and stand in support of Daksh Chaudhary and his associates.
