Kangpokpi, Manipur: Tension has escalated in Kangpokpi district following a serious arson incident. In K. Songalung Part-II village, unidentified assailants set fire to three permanent houses and four temporary huts during broad daylight on Monday, spreading fear among local residents.
According to police officials, preliminary investigations suggest the involvement of suspected cadres linked to the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF–Kamsan), though a detailed inquiry is ongoing.
Vehicles and Property Destroyed
The arson also destroyed one vehicle completely, while a jeep and several other vehicles suffered partial damage. Stored paddy, food supplies, gas cylinders, and household items in the affected homes were also reduced to ashes, causing significant losses for the families.
In response, the Kuki INP Manipur (KIM) and United Naga Council (UNC) held a joint meeting condemning the violent act. Both organizations stated that the brazen daytime attack created fear in the area and caused serious damage to innocent civilians’ property. Security measures have been stepped up, and authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
Appeal for Peace
Amid rising tension, KIM and UNC have jointly appealed for peace and restraint. Conflicting claims have emerged from different community groups: while Kuki-affiliated organizations described the incident as an attack on permanent settlements, some Naga organizations labeled it an action against illegal structures. Both sides condemned the arson, urging people to avoid rumors, maintain law and order, and ensure justice and relief for the victims.
