Temperature Drops Sharply in Uttar Pradesh; Meerut Records Coldest Night of the Season

Lucknow: Winter has begun tightening its grip across Uttar Pradesh, with night temperatures dipping significantly over the past few days. Meerut witnessed the coldest night of the season as the minimum temperature plummeted to 5.2°C, marking a sharp drop that has intensified the winter chill.

According to meteorologists, the decline in night temperatures is expected to continue, while daytime conditions will remain relatively comfortable with sunshine offering relief from the cold. Several districts across the state have reported a similar downward trend in temperatures.

Dry Weather Forecast; Morning Fog Likely in Many Areas

On December 2, dry weather is likely to prevail over both western and eastern UP. Light to moderate fog may appear in some areas during the early morning hours.

A similar weather pattern is expected on December 3, 4, and 5, with clear skies across the state and patches of fog in the morning. Weather conditions are likely to remain unchanged on December 6 and 7, with dry weather continuing and a fog alert issued for several regions.

District-Wise Temperature Snapshot

  • Meerut: 5.2°C (lowest in UP)
  • Bareilly: 6.6°C
  • Kanpur City: 7.7°C
  • Etawah: 8.8°C
  • Bulandshahr & Hardoi: 9°C
  • Lucknow: 10.6°C (minimum), 25.6°C (maximum)

Meteorologist Mohammad Danish stated that minimum temperatures will continue to fall in the coming days, while maximum temperatures may see a slight rise. “Daytime sunshine and cold nights will remain the dominant pattern,” he added.

La Niña and IOD Expected to Intensify Winter This Season

Weather expert Atul Kumar Singh noted that this winter—from December to February—could witness a rise in the number of cold wave days across UP. In November 2025, the state recorded minimum temperatures 1–2°C below normal and maximum temperatures 1–3°C below normal, indicating the onset of severe winter conditions.

Though La Niña conditions over the Pacific Ocean are gradually weakening, their effects—combined with a neutral phase of the negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)—are likely to intensify winter across the region.

This combined climate impact may persist throughout the winter season, with forecasts suggesting below-normal average temperatures from December to February. As a result, most districts in Uttar Pradesh could face prolonged cold winds and extended cold wave spells—2 to 5 days more than the usual 4–6 days. Only the southern parts of Purvanchal are expected to experience comparatively mild cold.
