Hyderabad, Telangana: In a creative effort to tackle the growing menace of monkeys in villages, Kummari Ranjit, the newly elected Panchayat head of Nirmal district, has taken an unusual approach—dressing up in a bear costume to frighten monkeys away. A video of Ranjit patrolling the village in the costume has gone viral on social media, showing the effectiveness of his initiative.
From Failed Traps to a Bear Suit
Earlier attempts to capture the monkeys using cages funded by villagers—who contributed ₹50 from each household—were largely unsuccessful. Only a few monkeys were caught. Searching online for alternative solutions, Ranjit found the idea of using a bear costume and decided to implement it to provide immediate relief to villagers.
Serious Monkey Problem in Lingapur Village
Lingapur village has been facing a severe monkey problem for the past two to three years. The issue even became a key election topic. Supported by the BRS Party, Ranjit had promised during his campaign to address this problem. Reports suggest that upon seeing the bear costume, several monkeys were indeed frightened and fled.
Wider Issue Across Telangana
Ranjit emphasized that the state government needs to take the issue seriously. Many villages in Telangana face similar problems, with monkeys damaging crops and sometimes injuring residents. He called for a permanent solution to this growing threat.
Villagers Experimenting with Local Solutions
Across Telangana, villagers, in coordination with gram panchayats, are experimenting with various strategies, including hiring people to catch animals, setting traps, and bringing langurs to scare away monkeys. Lavudya Joga Nayak from Govindaraopet in Mulugu district mentioned that while local efforts help, a sustainable solution can only come from government intervention.
