Patna: Ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, Lalu Prasad Yadav, who had expelled his elder son Tej Pratap Yadav from the party and distanced himself from him, made a surprising visit to his son’s home on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. Tej Pratap’s traditional dahi-chura (curd and flattened rice) feast, graced by his father’s presence, has sparked speculation of a possible family reconciliation within Bihar’s political landscape.
The Makar Sankranti celebration turned out to be both emotionally and politically significant for the Yadav family this year. Tej Pratap personally invited his father, mother, and younger brother to the feast, also extending invitations to the Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and other prominent leaders.
The Controversy That Started the Rift
The dispute traces back to just before the assembly elections when Tej Pratap disclosed a 12-year-old personal relationship on Facebook. The revelation caused a stir within the family and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Viewing it as a breach of discipline, Lalu Prasad Yadav expelled his son from the party, severing both political and familial ties.
Tej Pratap Carves a New Political Path
Following his expulsion, Tej Pratap founded the Janashakti Janta Dal, fielding his own candidates in the elections, making a mark on the electoral results. The Makar Sankranti feast is now seen as a symbolic gesture of showing his political strength while attempting to reunite the family.
Father Present, Younger Brother Awaited
Tej Pratap’s invitation received a positive response from Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi. Lalu’s presence and blessings at the feast brought joy to supporters. All eyes are now on whether his younger brother Tejashwi Yadav will also attend, potentially signaling a full restoration of family ties.
