Tamil Nadu College Student Dies Under Mysterious Circumstances; Dalit Fiance Alleges Honor Killing

Chennai, Tamil Nadu: A shocking incident has emerged from Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, where a 20-year-old college student died under suspicious circumstances. Her Dalit fiancé has alleged that her family opposed their inter-caste marriage. Police are currently investigating the case.

The deceased, identified as Shivamathi, belonged to a Savarna family and was a second-year college student. According to her fiancé, they had been in a relationship and had planned to marry secretly on February 6. He claimed that Shivamathi’s parents were strongly opposed to the marriage due to caste differences, and her maternal uncle had allegedly threatened him, warning that he would kill her if the wedding took place. This has raised suspicions of honor killing or incitement to suicide.

Police Register Case of Suspicious Death

Police have registered a case of suspicious death in connection with Shivamathi’s passing. Given the sensitive nature of the matter and the caste-related allegations, the investigation has been handed over to the Assistant Commissioner of Police.

While the fiancé has raised the issue of honor-related violence, police sources said that preliminary inquiries and evidence at the scene suggest that the student may have committed suicide. Authorities emphasized that no conclusions would be drawn until the post-mortem report is received. Statements are being recorded from family members, friends, and the fiancé as part of the ongoing investigation.
